September 29, 2023 – On September 29, Georgian Bay General Hospital (GBGH) held an event to recognize the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation which takes place across Canada every September 30. This was the hospital’s third annual event during which staff, professional staff and volunteers were invited to learn about, reflect on and remember the tragic significance of the residential school system in Canada’s history. To incorporate elements of Indigenous culture, there was smudging, a prayer, honour song, and Every Child Matters flag-raising. The event culminated with the heartfelt account of a residential school survivor, who shared insights and experiences from her 10 years in a residential school.

September 25, 2023 – Each year on September 25, Georgian Bay General Hospital (GBGH) recognizes Franco-Ontarian Day – a time to celebrate the unique francophone community the hospital is so proud to serve. As part of GBGH’s commitment to providing French language services in several designated departments, the hospital provides patients with an opportunity – called Active Offer – to identify if they would like to receive services in their preferred language of French. GBGH first received its partial French Language Services designation in September 2017.

September 19, 2023 – Continuing a long history of collaboration, Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre (RVH) and Georgian Bay General Hospital (GBGH) have announced a new partnership that will expand research activities focused on improving patient care and clinical outcomes.

“As our region’s population rapidly grows over the next decade, RVH and GBGH want to be at the forefront of health system innovation,” says Gail Hunt, RVH President and CEO. “Sharing knowledge and expanding the depth and breadth of our research programs will help our hospitals find better ways to solve many of the challenges we face today, particularly those that need to be solved at a community level.”

While the partnership will initially focus on developing a joint framework for streamlining procedures, training, and ideas, GBGH can immediately leverage existing resources provided by the RVH Research Institute, a well-established, research facility within RVH, comprised of research teams and a world-class research ethics board.

“Given RVH’s size and regional scope, a partnership of this nature means GBGH can further expand our research and education resources to support our clinicians in delivering excellent care for the residents of North Simcoe,” says Matthew Lawson, GBGH president and CEO. “By investing in strong relationships that maximize our collective expertise, we hope more of our patients will be able to access new drugs, devices, or other treatment approaches which will improve their quality of care and outcomes.”

With the region experiencing rapid population growth and aging, issues that are common to RVH and GBGH today, such as chronic illness, wait times, and staffing shortages, are expected to increase as the need for specialized medical care rises.

Simply focusing on the clinical aspects of care may not be enough to address these challenges.

We’re at a pivotal time in healthcare,” says Dr. Paige Churchill, GBGH Chief of Surgery. “A broad set of social and economic factors are having a big impact on both equitable access to care and community health outcomes. There’s an urgent need for communities across the region to not only work closely together to tackle urgent health issues, but to apply research and innovative thinking to drive and communicate scientifically credible evidence that the changes we’re making are indeed benefiting patients, their families, and our staff.”

As hospitals face increasingly more complex pressures, both RVH and GBGH hope this venture will evolve to include other hospitals and community partners, particularly as new digital technologies emerge for testing and validation, including artificial intelligence, precision medicine, wearables, robotics, 3D printing, and immersive reality.

“A strong applied health research network would become a catalyst for investment and discovery,” says Dr. Giulio DiDiodato, RVH critical care physician and Chief Research Scientist. “When more hospitals collaborate, they create diverse environments that make it easier for academic and industry partners, as well as local innovators, entrepreneurs, and growing businesses, to turn their ideas into practical solutions, ultimately contributing to a healthy, prosperous, and sustainable region.”

Dr. Katherine Aucoin, general surgeon at Georgian Bay General Hospital (GBGH), performs the first endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) procedure ever completed at the hospital on July 27, 2023. GBGH anticipates completing up to 100 of these procedures annually, reducing travel and time for patients by bringing care closer to home.

August 17, 2023 – Georgian Bay General Hospital (GBGH) has added a new service to its growing surgical program in an effort to better serve its community. The hospital anticipates completing up to 100 endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) procedures annually using a new piece of equipment called the C-Arm. ERCP is an advanced endoscopic procedure performed to access and repair bile and pancreatic ducts.

“ERCP is an important procedure for patients experiencing post-surgical complications such as a bile leak, malignant biliary obstructions and choledocholithiasis, which occurs when there are gallstones in the common bile duct,” says Dr. Katherine Aucoin, general surgeon, GBGH. “I am very pleased we can now bring ERCP to local patients, as well as others across the region who may not have access to this procedure in their home hospital.”

Emergent ERCP procedures will be performed by Dr. Aucoin for GBGH inpatients, as well as inpatients from other hospitals where they do not have this service available. Outpatients in the community who require this procedure on a semi-urgent or elective basis, can be referred by a physician to Dr. Aucoin at Bayside Surgical Associates.

“GBGH is committed to continually providing patient-centred care that aligns with the needs of the community we serve,” says Dr. Vikram Ralhan, chief of staff and emergency physician, GBGH. “By expanding our services, we are improving access and bringing care closer to home for local patients. We will also continue to pursue equipment and technology, such as the C-Arm, which helps us improve patient experiences, outcomes and access to care. For all these reasons, the continued growth of GBGH’s surgical program is a priority for this hospital.”

August 8, 2023 – Georgian Bay General Hospital (GBGH) has recently launched a new Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD) and Palliative Care service to support the hospital’s admitted patients in their end of life decision-making. This service is available to any patient at the request of the physician providing their general, primary care while at GBGH.

“While most general practitioners and hospitalists are trained to employ palliative approaches in their everyday care, it can be challenging in a busy hospital setting to complete comprehensive palliative assessments, which involves counselling and difficult conversations,” says Dr. Vikram Ralhan, chief of staff, GBGH. “At GBGH we are adapting our services to grow and align with community needs. Ensuring patients have access to compassionate palliative and MAiD care is a priority for GBGH as the hospital strives to offer consistent and dependable care that is person-driven.”

The MAiD and Palliative Care service is being supported by five physicians with special palliative expertise who are dedicated to ensuring the highest quality of care for patients with serious life-limiting disease. This may include patients in end of life with a focus on providing relief from symptoms and improving their quality of life. To ensure consistent access to MAiD and palliative care guidance and consultations while at GBGH, a weekly on-call schedule has been developed to ensure comprehensive coverage throughout the year.

During a palliative care consultation, plans and other recommendations will be sent by the palliative care physician to the physician providing primary care while in hospital, as well as to community providers to ensure a seamless transition in care. For a MAiD consultation, the on-call palliative physician may complete assessments in determining eligibility for MAiD.

July 13, 2023 – Georgian Bay General Hospital (GBGH) has launched its new strategic plan, which will serve as the organization’s map for the next seven years. The strategic plan will guide the hospital’s planning, decision-making and priorities from now until 2030. Simultaneously, GBGH has also released its 2022-2023 Annual Report in English and French, summarizing highlights from the past year and outlining the hospital’s new strategy moving forward.

“GBGH’s previous strategic plan was launched in 2018 and served our hospital well over the past five years through significant growth, change and a pandemic,” says Matthew Lawson, president and CEO, GBGH. “It was time to re-evaluate, update and add to that plan to form our new strategy for the foreseeable future. Although there are core principles we will always include in our strategy – such as high quality, safe care, responsible resource management and patient-centred experiences – additional priorities have emerged and are reflected in our updated strategy.”

GBGH’s new strategic plan is based on a main purpose statement – We Make Excellent Care Personal. – which defines why the organization exists. This purpose statement unifies team members under a common purpose and serves as an overarching statement for those outside GBGH to understand what the hospital strives to achieve.

“GBGH is always committed to quality, which is reflected by the ‘excellent care’ portion of our purpose statement,” says Lawson. “What makes our organization unique is our additional focus on individual patient experiences. We want every patient to have the most positive, personalized experience we can provide.”

Five new values are also included in the strategic plan. The values of GBGH’s strategic plan describe how the hospital will do its work – the elements of the hospital’s culture that guide how we deliver care.

  • Inspire Dedication: We show up every day with a commitment to caring for the health and wellbeing of our patients, our community, and each other.
  • Patients First: We listen, work as a team, and collaborate with patients to create a safe and personalized care journey for all.
  • Empower Others: We foster feelings of belonging by listening to and investing in our people, and by giving them space to grow.
  • Lead with Empathy: We support our patients and their families by leading with compassion, respect, and the willingness to go the extra mile.
  • Think Forward: We seek excellence through continuous improvement and innovation.

Additionally, GBGH’s strategic plan includes four main themes on which the hospital will focus its priorities and initiatives over the next seven years:

  • Continual Excellence – includes a commitment to exceeding quality and safety standards; focus on person-centred care; strategies for providing consistent, dependable care; and collaboration with partners to benefit our community
  • Trust & Belonging – includes building a sense of belonging and community among people, patients and partners; addressing health inequities; proactively strengthening relationship with Indigenous peoples and communities; creating an environment of culturally safe care; and a focus on Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging
  • Dedicated Team – includes promoting an environment of continual learning and growth; investing in and supporting people to perform at their highest potential; and celebrating successes
  • Sustainable Growth – includes growing our services to align with community needs; investing in physical infrastructure; leveraging technology to improve patient experiences, outcomes and health equity; enhance partnerships to support patients throughout their health journey; and financial sustainability

In deciding on the areas of priority to be included in the strategic plan, GBGH conducted extensive consultation internally and externally. The hospital formed a strategic planning advisory committee, which represented the perspectives of frontline and support staff, as well as professional staff, leadership and members of the Board of Directors. To develop the final plan, this committee evaluated feedback provided via a community survey (which received over 300 responses), focus groups and interviews with healthcare and community partners, as well as an internal and focus groups for staff, professional staff and volunteers.

GBGH’s Annual Report includes a joint message to the community from the chair of the hospital’s Board of Directors Tim Kastelic and president and CEO Matthew Lawson. June 20, 2023 – During its Team Appreciation Week, Georgian Bay General Hospital (GBGH) announced the 2023 recipients of the Board of Directors’ Awards of Excellence. The Board of Directors’ Awards of Excellence are announced annually to recognize staff and professional staff (physicians, midwives, dentists) who have made remarkable contributions to GBGH while exhibiting the hospital’s core values and helping the hospital reach its strategic goals.

“The Board Awards of Excellence are the highest honour bestowed by the hospital for outstanding contributions to the hospital’s strategy and patient care – whether it be through work on the frontlines or in a supporting role,” says Tim Kastelic, chair, GBGH Board of Directors. “As these awards are peer nominated, the recipients’ colleagues clearly think very highly of their commitment to GBGH and we are so fortunate to have these individuals and teams as part of our hospital. While these recipients are outstanding in their own right and so well-deserving of this recognition, I am always inspired knowing there are many other excellent professionals at the hospital who are working together to be there for this community every day.”

The recipients of this year’s awards represent a cross-section of team members throughout the organization and include the following teams/individuals:

Engagement & Inclusiveness Award

  • Danielle Norton – ward clerk, Emergency department (ED)

Danielle is a great team player within the ED and throughout GBGH. She takes pride in her work and helps in any way she can with patient calls, even when they aren’t specific to the ED. Danielle plays a vital role as the point person for the department with her strong communication skills. Danielle’s strong work ethic and willingness to go above and beyond as a ward clerk is clearly evident in all areas of her work. She is a strong promoter of excellent care and it is not uncommon to hear Danielle say, “What if this was your family member?” Danielle is a constant reminder of all of GBGH’s core values.

  • Food Services

Over the last year, the Food Services department has gone through significant change. From implementing the new Freshflex system and other major changes, the Food Services team has had to adapt to many new things. Through all this change, they continued to work on communication, engagement and inclusiveness. The Food Services team completed an internal review, looked at areas for improvement and set objectives as a team. Since then, they have continued to work on their goals and have implemented many changes – all of which have been beneficial to the team, patient care and GBGH. While working through all these changes, the team kept in mind GBGH’s values. By focusing on these values, the team has grown closer, adapted well to change and continue to deliver great things.

 Quality & Safety Award

  • Lindsay McCoshen – Occcupational therapist

Lindsay is very passionate about her work as an occupational therapist. As changes to the program have happened, Lindsay has been on the ball when it comes to collaboration with partner hospitals and organizations to ensure the patient experience for all patients is top of mind. Lindsay ensures that regardless of whether a patient is admitted or transitioning home, they have access to safe and affordable equipment. Lindsay’s dedication and compassion towards patients, their health and wellness – and ultimately their safety – is unmatched.

  • Sam Kort – registered nurse (RN), Wound Care

In addition to her role as a frontline RN, Sam is also the wound care expert at GBGH. Sam provides all team members with education and support when dealing with difficult-to-treat wounds. Through her knowledge and expertise in this area, which she gladly shares with her colleagues, Sam is consistently helping patients improve their outcomes and overall health. Sam’s work continues to inspire and helps the hospital improve the quality of care for all patients.

 Accountability & Sustainability Award:

  • Michelle Blake – manager, Surgery, Ambulatory Care & Obstetrics

Michelle has worked at GBGH for over 19 years, first as a nurse and now as a manager. In her first year as a manager, Michelle has spent countless hours working on ways to continually improve her departments, making them better for patients and staff. Through her work as the manager for the Surgical program, Michelle has advocated for more funding for the program, equipment and staff education. Her level of dedication and compassion has had a positive impact on her teams. This has led to improved team morale and is ultimately reflected in the quality of patient care every Surgical, Ambulatory Care and Obstetrics patient receives.

  • Respiratory Therapy (RT)

The RT team provides 24-hour coverage at GBGH, helping to keep care closer to home for many patients and contribute to the hospital’s Level 3 Basic ICU designation (second highest designation outside of specialty units). The RT team helps ensure fulsome acute care throughout the hospital. During the COVID-19 pandemic, having the RT team’s expertise available 24/7 meant more critically ill patients were able to remain at GBGH, closer to their families and local support system. Being able to bring their knowledge to the GBGH ICU has also helped improve patient outcomes and has also been crucial in helping when critical transfers to other facilities are required.

Vision Award

  • Gail Nielsen – manager, Human Resources

Gail Nielsen is a problem solver, a risk-mitigator, a recruiter, a bridge builder and more. The list of positive qualities Gail brings to the workplace is long, and she exemplifies GBGH’s values every day. She will always go the extra mile to ensure the units have the staff they need, flag for leadership that a staff member needs more support, or suggest considering an alternative option of which no one else had thought. Gail is the epitome of tact, collaboration and compassion, and although she may not work on the frontlines of patient care, it is always at the forefront of her work. Recently, Gail’s leadership in a major electronic time and attendance project was a huge undertaking and she worked tirelessly to ensure the success of this critically important new system. Gail is also known for her dedication and positive attitude throughout the most challenging situations. She remains calm and collected, never showing a sign of stress and is always working toward solutions.

  • Nicole Lefaive – professional practice leader (PPL)

Nicole Lefaive is a dedicated team member at GBGH. Starting at GBGH first as a nurse, she has continued to grow, showing immense dedication and passion in her roles at the hospital. Nicole has now been a PPL for over a year and has helped to transform the experience of frontline staff. Her hard work and valuable efforts continue to improve the onboarding experience of new frontline team members, ensuring they have the support they need to be successful in their roles. Looking to the future, Nicole continues to explore ways we can improve the staff and patient experience – to improve not only patient care, but the morale and experience of the teams she assists.

May 9, 2023 – Knowing patient feedback is the most effective way for Georgian Bay General Hospital (GBGH) to evaluate and improve the care it provides, the hospital is launching a new patient experience survey this week. Known as Insights to Inspire Care, the survey (link) will be emailed to patients within 24-48 hours of discharge from hospital.

“We continually strive to improve the patient experience during their time with our hospital,” says Angie Saini, vice president of Clinical Services and chief nursing executive. “It is only when we view the care we provide through the eyes of our patients that we will be able to further improve. The data collected from these surveys will be analyzed for trends, enable us to see opportunities for improvement and highlight what we’re doing well so we can celebrate the positive. We want to know about even the smallest things because they could flag an opportunity which will have a big impact on other patients going forward.”

The new survey will ask the same questions as the hospital’s previous survey for consistency in data to measure improvements in the patient experience year over year. Although the questions remain the same, there are several new features of the survey that are improvements over the past. GBGH will receive responses in a more timely manner, enabling the hospital leaders to access it in real-time and act on feedback more quickly. Surveys will also be available in many languages beyond English and French.

The survey takes approximately 10 minutes to complete and is completely anonymous unless the patient chooses to provide their identity and contact information. For patients who do not have email, other options to complete the survey will be coming soon.
