COVID-19 (Novel Coronavirus) Updates

While masking requirements in other settings will expire on June 11, 2022, GBGH is committed to keeping patients, staff, visitors and volunteers safe through a continuation of mandatory masking within the hospital. Health experts have agreed that continued use of masking in hospital settings remains a simple and necessary safeguard. Masking helps prevent the most vulnerable patients – those cared for by hospitals – from contracting COVID-19. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation.

Emergency Department

GBGH’s Emergency department is here for you if you are ill or injured and require medical attention.

THE EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT IS NOT A COVID-19 TESTING SITE.

If you think you have COVID-19 and are not experiencing symptoms or have mild symptoms similar to a cold, please do not come into the Emergency department for testing.

Visiting the hospital for testing puts other vulnerable patients at risk of exposure to COVID-19.

If you meet provincial testing criteria, please book an appointment at your local COVID-19 Assessment Centre: https://covid-19.ontario.ca/assessment-centre-locations

The North Simcoe Family Health Team has opened a COVID-19, Cold and Flu Care Clinic available by appointment only. To book an appointment:

Visitor and Patient Information

June 21, 2022 – Georgian Bay General Hospital (GBGH) is lifting its mandatory visitor vaccination policy based on the current pandemic status in the region. Effective immediately, visitors to the hospital will no longer be required to show proof of COVID-19 immunization as a condition of entry to the hospital.

GBGH is now allowing limited visitation based on the following:

  • Two visitors at a time per patient during visiting hours
    • Exceptions for palliative patients – please contact the care team
  • Visiting hours: 9 a.m. – 8 p.m.
  • Food and drink are not permitted

The exceptions to the two visitors include visitation for a palliative/actively dying patient. In palliative cases, GBGH will allow up to four visitors at a time, as coordinated with the care team.

When a unit is in outbreak, visitation on that unit is limited to essential caregivers only.  Please contact the unit you are visiting for more information.

Birthing patients are also permitted one visitor for as long as they require assistance, regardless of visiting hours.

Emergency department patients and outpatients (Ambulatory Care, Diagnostic Imaging, Day Surgery) may have one support person if deemed necessary by the patient.

While visitors will no longer be required to show proof of COVID-19 immunization, GBGH remains committed to keeping patients, staff, visitors and volunteers safe through a continuation of mandatory masking within the hospital. All patients and visitors will be required to wear a hospital-provided mask for the duration of their visit. Health experts have agreed that continued use of masking in hospital settings remains a simple and necessary safeguard. Masking helps prevent the most vulnerable patients – those cared for by hospitals – from contracting COVID-19.

Visitors and patients will also continue to be actively screened for COVID-19 symptoms and mandatory mask adherence upon entry to GBGH.

COVID-19 policies are subject to change based on the status of the pandemic within the region GBGH serves.
