Pet Visitation

As part of our commitment to providing high-quality, patient-centered care, we are excited to announce the introduction of the Pet Visitation and Pet Therapy programs!

All pet visits are limited to dogs or cats that are over one year of age, have received all required vaccinations, and have a calm temperament (no barking, nipping, jumping, or uncontrollable energy). All visiting pets must be on be on a short leash – no longer than 2 metres – and cannot be a retractable leash.

Alternative types of animals must be approved by the Volunteer and Student Coordinator and Unit Manager, and will only be approved in extremely limited circumstances.

No pet/animal shall visit GBGH within one week of:

  • Episodes of vomiting or diarrhea
  • Urinary or fecal incontinence
  • Episodes of sneezing or coughing of unknown origin
  • Open wounds
  • Ear infections
  • Skin infections
  • Ticks, fleas, or other infestations

If you wish to bring in your pet to visit a patient, please complete the application here.

Pets will not be permitted to enter GBGH without completing the application and receiving approval. Approval will be completed by a supervisor or manager, and a GBGH Approved Pet ID Tag will be provided that must be worn on each visit.

Service Animals

Service animals do not require advance approval. Patients scheduling an appointment who have a service animal are encouraged to notify their care team in advance. Documentation confirming the service animal status may be requested and must be produced. All service animals must wear identification. Documentation should be available in the patient chart related to the role of the service animal.
