Student Opportunities

Consider a career in health care, GBGH invites you to explore and discover a comprehensive array of student opportunities. If you have the motivation and the desire to pursue a career in health care, we have the opportunities for you to achieve it.  You’ll get hands-on experience while collaborating with some of the best interprofessional teams in the area. You will learn from them, while they learn from you, too.

Extern Program

GBGH is seeking Clinical Externs to work as unregulated healthcare providers. This transitional role will support qualifying students to develop clinical expertise while being immersed in a hospital setting. Clinical externs work in collaboration with a unit nursing team under direct and/or indirect supervision of an appointed registered nursing professional. They may perform pre‐identified Controlled Acts authorized to nursing within the Regulated Health Professions Act (RHPA) of Ontario delegated to them under the supervision of a nursing professional who is authorized to perform them.

In accordance with the Ministry of Health guidelines, GBGH will consider Clinical Externs enrolled in any of the following fields of study listed below:

Nursing Extern

Nursing students in any year of study in a College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) approved Baccalaureate Nursing (BScN or BN) program and Practical Nursing (PN) program.

Internationally Educated Nurses (IENs)

IENs who have initiated registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO), have received a CNO letter of direction and meet one of the following:

  • are in any year of study in a CNO approved program, such as a BScN-IEN program, PN-IEN program, or a
  • re completing a micro-credential plan with a curriculum to meet the CNO requirements for registration (e.g. Standards of Practice for nursing, Entry-to Practice Competencies, Evidence of Safe Practice, Evidence of English Language Proficiency) or
  • have completed their educational requirements (e.g. BScN-IEN/PN-IEN program or micro-credentialing) and are waiting to write their registration exam

Paramedic Extern

Paramedic students in the second year of an approved Paramedic Program.

Physiotherapy Extern

Physiotherapy students in any year of study of a training program accredited by Physiotherapy Education Accreditation Canada (PEAC).

Occupational Therapy Extern

Occupational therapy students in any year of study in a training program accredited by the Canadian Association of Occupational Therapists (CAOT).

Respiratory Therapy Extern

Respiratory Therapy students in their second and third year of a training program accredited by the Council on Accreditation of Respiratory Therapy Education, which is administered by the Canadian Society of Respiratory Therapists.

 

New Graduate Guarantee Program

GBGH is a proud participant in the Nursing Graduate Guarantee (NGG) program that is designed to support Registered Nurses and Registered Practical Nurses who are within 12 months of registering with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) by providing them with a full-time employment opportunity.

The NGG program at GBGH consists of:

  • Nursing and interprofessional orientation learning modules to support a comprehensive understanding of Standards and Policies
  • A competency-based learning pathway and learning plan to support the nurse’s learning needs
  • 12 weeks preceptor shifts for unit(s) specific to NGG hire, to support the transition of the new graduate into practice
  • Regular check-ins and mentorship with the Nurse Educator

GBGH supports new nursing graduates’ transition into practice in the following areas/specializations:

  • Inpatient Acute Medicine
  • Emergency Department
  • Critical Care

Upon confirming eligibility, to be considered for current Nursing Graduate Guarantee (NGG) postings, applicants must apply on the New Graduate Guarantee Portal.

Student Placements

GBGH accepts diploma, undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate students from a wide range of disciplines who need to complete a supervised practicum as part of their academic requirements.

Student types include but are not limited to Nursing, Occupational Therapy, Respiratory Therapy, Speech Language Pathology, Medical Laboratory Technology, Pharmacy, Physiotherapy, and Social Work.

To initiate the process for student placements please first contact your school’s student placement coordinator, who is on-site at your school. They are responsible for requesting student placements within GBGH. If you are not certain who your school’s placement coordinator is, you will need to contact your school administration office directly, so that they can connect you with the appropriate person. Unfortunately, we are unable to accept individual requests from students who do not have a student placement coordinator at their school. Please direct inquiries to careers@gbgh.on.ca.
