No Summer Holiday for GBGH: Georgian Bay General Hospital Experiences Significant Increase in Patient Complexity and Demand

September 29, 2026 – While summer is often seen as a quieter season, that was not the case at Georgian Bay General Hospital (GBGH). Over the past several months, the hospital has been operating under sustained pressure as the complexity of patient needs and demand for services increased significantly.

Between June 1 and Labour Day, GBGH’s Emergency Department saw about the same number of patients as during the same period last year. However, many patients needed more comprehensive care, resulting in a 24% increase in the number of patients admitted to hospital from the Emergency Department. Visits related to mental health concerns also rose by 16% compared to 2025. At the same time, demand for inpatient beds remained extremely high, with the hospital operating at an average of 135% acute medical occupancy and reaching a peak of 157% on Labour Day.

Demand extended well beyond the Emergency Department. GBGH’s Diagnostic Imaging Department experienced a 15% increase in patients requiring services such as CT scans, MRI, ultrasound, and X-ray appointments.

“These numbers reflect a growing trend in healthcare across Ontario, where hospitals are caring for local residents with increasingly complex needs,” said Matthew Lawson, President and CEO. “While our teams continue to provide outstanding care, the increased demand has created challenges, including longer wait times and the need to care for patients in temporary or non-traditional clinical spaces.”

To help patients recover at home whenever appropriate, GBGH has significantly expanded its GBGH@Home program, nearly doubling the number of patients supported through the service in recent months. The program allows eligible patients to receive hospital-level monitoring and care in the comfort of their own homes, helping free up valuable hospital capacity while improving the patient experience.

GBGH recognizes that increased demand has at times resulted in longer waits for care and care provided in different spaces. GBGH wants the community to know that staff, physicians, volunteers, and partners have been working tirelessly throughout the summer to meet these challenges.

“We are incredibly grateful to our teams for their dedication, professionalism, and compassion,” Lawson added. “We also want to thank our community for the kindness, patience, and respect they continue to show our staff as we navigate these unprecedented pressures together.”

As the fall and flu season approaches, GBGH anticipates that demand for healthcare services will remain high. Community members may experience longer wait times, and some admitted patients may receive care in spaces that have been temporarily adapted to accommodate increased hospital occupancy.

Residents are encouraged to follow guidance from the local Public Health Unit, stay up to date on recommended vaccinations, practice good hand hygiene, and stay home when feeling unwell. Anyone planning to visit a loved one in hospital should postpone their visit if they are experiencing symptoms of illness.

Despite these pressures, GBGH’s Emergency Department remains open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

“If you are experiencing a medical emergency, please come to the Emergency Department,” said Dr. Vikram Ralhan, Chief of Staff. “Our dedicated team is here when you need us most.”
